Play with Purpose

It’s done! I have really enjoyed making this custom piece for the winner of my first newsletter contest. I loved being challenged by someone else’s colour selections. And there is something very satisfying about creating something that you know is going to a particular person. It give the whole endeavor a sense of purpose. Today’s blog is a story in pictures to show you the finished results.

Improvised patchwork wall art with swirling stitch pattern in shades of chartreuse, blue, black and red.

Sometimes I finish these pieces with a facing that is only seen on the back — other times I use a wraparound binding. I opted for binding here because I had lots of a fabric that worked perfectly for that purpose (read on to see that I also used that fabric for the back.)

I love the look of big-stitch hand quilting. Sometimes I go back and fill in the spaces with a second row of stitches to make a closed line, like I’ve done with the blue spiral here.

I tried something new with this pinwheel shape! I even made myself a little paper template to follow so the curves would be uniform.

Two top corner pockets on the back will hold a rod for hanging

When I first started making these I didn’t pay much attention to the back. Now I take pride in making the back look as polished as the front.

And of course, it needs a label for posterity! These label sheets are so easy. I can run them through my printer in batches, clip them out and iron them on.

And now for the final step, which is to package this treasure up for shipping. It’s going to be hard to say goodbye.
