Hi! I’m Anna Schmidt, a Canadian fibre artist from Winnipeg, Manitoba, working predominantly in the medium of quilt-making. While I learned to quilt through traditional methods and printed patterns, I quickly realized that what interests me most is using fabric as an expressive medium. As Georgia O’Keefe said, “I found that I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way.”
I find the tactile nature of quiltmaking satisfying, and my work incorporates a lot of hand-stitching, which I find meditative. I work extensively with second-hand or repurposed fabric, both as a nod to quilting traditions and in response to the ecological disaster of textile overconsumption. I like to blur the lines between quilts as Art Objects to be observed and quilts as household items to be used. As a retired educator I love to teach others how they can learn to express themselves with fabric.
